The Truth About Building a Business With Your Spouse

You guys see us going live on Whatnot and TikTok, selling products, and running Moms & Crumbs. But there’s a whole side of this business that happens behind the scenes: the marriage, the kids, the disagreements, and everything we’ve had to learn along the way.

For the first episode of this new season, I’m sitting down with my husband, Irving—also known as Mr. Crumbs—to open the Crumbs book and talk about what it’s really like to build a business together.

Because I didn’t do this alone. And as much as we love the life we’re building, getting here has taken a lot of growing, failing, and learning how to work as a team.

The Good of Building Something Together

One of my favorite parts of working with my husband is how much life we get to share. We have meals together, make decisions together, and get to experience the things we once dreamed about together.

We also get to include our four kids in what we’re building. Our oldest daughter streams with us, our teenage son helps with cameras and lighting, and our little Crumbs bring their own kind of energy to the warehouse!

Neither of us grew up with a blueprint for running a business. We’ve had to figure things out as we go. Now our kids get to watch that process and learn alongside us.

We’ve also watched each other change. Our confidence, organization, and ability to lead have grown because this business keeps asking us to learn something new.

Being Together All Day Takes Some Getting Used To

Let me be honest: a week or two into working together, I wanted to send him back to work. 😂

I loved my husband. But suddenly, we were together all the time, and I missed having my own space.

Going from seeing each other before and after work to sharing your entire day is a big adjustment. You discover habits, opinions, and ways of doing things that you didn’t notice before.

Irving compares it to two gears learning to move together. It takes time to find that rhythm.

For us, that meant learning to give each other space, talk through misunderstandings, and come back to the conversation when we were ready to listen.

Business Disagreements Can Follow You Home

When your spouse is also your business partner, a stressful day doesn’t automatically end when you leave the warehouse.

You still have to go home together. You still have a family to care for. And the disagreement you had earlier can follow you right through the front door.

We’ve had to learn how to work through issues and recognize when pride is getting in the way. Sometimes that means giving a little. Sometimes it means admitting that the other person sees something you don’t.

Money has been another area where we’ve had to grow together. Bringing in more income also means learning discipline, understanding the finances, and getting on the same page about spending.

And yes, Irving brings up my plant collection in this episode. Apparently, he has thoughts. 🌿

The Moment I Almost Quit

When I first started getting in front of the camera, I felt incredibly insecure.

I worried about how I looked. I worried about my accent. I worried that I couldn’t pronounce certain words or brands and that people would laugh at me.

I remember crying and telling Irving that I couldn’t do it.

He encouraged me to try again. One thing he told me stayed with me: “This is not over until you win.”

That support helped me get back in front of the camera, even though I still felt nervous.

Looking back, I think about what would have happened if I had stopped. Moms & Crumbs wouldn’t be what it is today if we hadn’t kept learning from the things that went wrong.

What Do You Want to Build Together?

Toward the end of our conversation, Irving asks a simple question: What do you want?

What do you want for your marriage? Your family? Your business?

Getting clear on that has helped us keep moving through difficult seasons. We’ve had years when family fun meant packing sandwiches for the beach and finding free things to do. Those memories still mean so much to us.

We’re grateful for what the business has made possible, and we’re still learning how to enjoy the process while we’re in it.
